Obituary
Hyndman, PA – John H. Shaffer, 89, of Hyndman went to be with the Lord Wednesday, October 20, 2021, at UPMC Western Maryland.
Born January 14, 1932, in Mt. Savage, MD; he was a son of the late Stanley Eugene and Carmen Faye (Wertz) Shaffer. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He is also preceded in death by his twin brother, James Shaffer, sisters, Ada Shaffer, and Dolores Korns.
Survived by his wife of 70 years, Ida J. (See) Shaffer, whom he married October 19, 1951; children, Kay Harden and husband Kenny, Beverly Upton and husband Pat, Ronda Moore and husband Allen, Cindy Leister and husband Terry, Janet Shroyer and husband Richard, Mary Ann Leister and husband Gary, and David Shaffer and wife Stacy; 15 grandchildren, Kristy DeHaven and husband Terry, Keith Harden and wife Delicia, Brian Upton and wife Anna, Julie Bishop, Lori Hay and husband Teddy, Terry Moore and wife Brandy, Shane Moore and wife Kimberly, Melissa Robison and husband Jason “Chip”, Sarah Scritchfield and husband Derek, Tony Shroyer and wife Kristy, Andrew Shroyer and wife Corrie, Gary Leister and wife Laiken, Zachary Leister and fiancé Alyssa Taylor, Jesse Shaffer and wife Sarah, Alexa Reese and husband Lucas; 29 great grandchildren and 2 more expected and 2 great-great grandchildren.
John attended Hyndman High School. He was a farmer and lumberman who started a lumber business in 1951 and in 1955 with his brother established Shaffer Bros. He was a member of Palo Alto United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School along with serving on many other committees. He was also past president of the Hyndman Campground Association for many years. He was an avid gardener who took pride in his beautiful plants which everyone admired.
Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic services will be private at the convenience of the family.
Burial will be at Palo Alto Hilltop Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made Palo Alto United Methodist Church.
