Obituary

Ray V. Evans, 83, of 112 Locust St., Hyndman, went to be with the Lord Friday, September 3, 2010, at his home.

He was born August 10, 1927, in Hyndman, PA; a son of the late Mahlon W. and Nellie Grace (Aberle) Evans. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Paul and Glenn Evans.

Mr. Evans is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jean (Cavan) Evans, whom he married February 27, 1948; a daughter, Gail Sides and husband John of Vail AZ; sons, Greg Evans of Mercersburg, PA, Dave Evans and wife Brenda of Tucson, AZ; four grandchildren, Jennifer Sides and fiancée, Nathaniel Beyor of Santa Monica, CA, Matthew Sides of Tucson, AZ, Alex Evans of Phoenix, AZ and Erik Evans of Tucson, AZ; a sister, Idella Evans and family friend Ada Simpkins of Hyndman, a sister-in-law, Katherine Evans of Hyndman and many loving nieces and nephews.

Mr. Evans was a 1945 graduate of the Hyndman High School and upon graduation joined the Merchant Marines. Ray was a meter reader and store keeper with the Potomac Edison Company, retiring after 43 years of service.
As a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, he served on various boards and committees and was a Sunday School Superintendant and teacher for over 20 years. He served as the treasurer of the Hyndman Camp Meeting Association for 45 years. Ray was a proud member of the Hyndman Community Band, the Hyndman Londonderry Lions Club and was a volunteer with the scouting program in Hyndman. A former member of the board of directors of the Hyndman Area Rescue Squad, he also served on the Hyndman Borough Council.

Friends will be received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, Inc., 169 Clarence Street, Hyndman on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

A funeral service will be conducted at Grace United Methodist Church, Schellsburg St., Hyndman on Wednesday at 1 p.m. with Rev. Lance Tucker, Rev. Sharletta Green and Rev. Calvin Cook officiating.

Burial will follow at Cooks Mills Cemetery, Hyndman, PA, with Thomas Groves, Mark Miller, Mike Miller, Leon Moskey, Rod Shaffer, John Sides and Stephen Sides serving as pallbearers. Matthew Sides, Alex Evans, Erik Evans, Nate Beyor, Charles Harclerode, and Mark Harclerode will serve as honorary pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, Hyndman PA 15545 or Maryland Symphony Orchestra, 30 West Washington St., Hagerstown, MD 21740.
