Obituary

Eleanor “Ellie” Louise Kuhn (née Smith), 83, of Gravel Pit, PA, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 2020 in Meyersdale from complications resulting from Alzheimer’s disease.
Born May 2, 1937 in Cumberland, MD, Ellie was the daughter of the late Esther Louise (Wilson) Welsh and the late Carl William George Smith.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth W. Kuhn, Sr., also by her sister, Marian (Smith) Rizer, and their stepfather, Homer Welsh.
Ellie was a graduate of the Allegany High School Class of ’55 and Catherman’s Business School.  She was employed by the Celanese Corporation before she married, and in later years she enjoyed working as an Avon Lady.  Despite her early secretarial training, Ellie dedicated herself to be a full-time mother and often supported her 5 children as a classroom volunteer and Cub Scouts Den Leader.  Before becoming ill, Ellie was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Madley, PA and volunteered for the Hyndman-Londonderry Public Library.  With her husband, Ken, she served as a dispatcher for the Hyndman Rescue Squad in its early years, was a member of the Hyndman Grange  #1954, and danced regularly with the Hy-Lo Lads & Lassies square dancing club.  She was an avid reader, crocheted many items for family and friends, greatly enjoyed gardening, having quite the green thumb, and found pleasure in feeding & watching the many hummingbirds that frequented her yard.  She was kind, generous, and funny, and she loved doting on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Ellie is survived by her children:  Jennifer (Kuhn) Dawson, Wellersburg; Kenneth Kuhn, Jr., Germantown, MD; Daniel Kuhn, Bedford; Elizabeth (Kuhn) Moore and husband, Thomas, Arnold, MO; and Neil Kuhn and wife, Barbara, Gravel Pit.  Ellie is also survived by her 7 grandchildren:  Adam Dawson and wife, Shana; Seth Dawson and wife, Amanda; Leah (Dawson) Sines and husband, Robert; Justin Moore; Sarah Kuhn and fiancé, Eric Olson; Stephen Kuhn and wife, Brittany; and Alexis Kuhn.  Ellie’s death is also mourned by her 6 great-grandchildren:  Jacob Dawson, Nicholas Dawson, Mason Dawson, Conner Dawson, Ryley Sines, and Ava Sines.
Friends will be received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, Inc., 169 Clarence Street, Hyndman on Saturday May 1, 2021 from 9:30 to 10a.m where a memorial service will follow at 10 a.m. with The Rev. Ryan Viands officiating. Masks and social distancing required.
Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Cumberland.
