Obituary

Hyndman, PA – Harry Troy “Henskie” Ritchey, completed his 100th year and died peacefully at his home in Hyndman on May 12, 2018.
Born May 12, 1917 in Cumberland he was a son of the late Dove Eli and Nora Pearl (Lingenfelter) Ritchey. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth “Betty” L. (Pick) Ritchey in 2009, brothers, Dove Edwin and Bruce Doyle Ritchey; a sister, Nancy Irene Ritchey.
Survived by children, Tom Ritchey and wife Anne of Irving TX, Barbara Ritchey and husband John Huckaby of Lewisburg, PA, Dave Ritchey of Huntington, WV, Sue Hosselrode and husband Bob of Cumberland; and two loving grandchildren, Thomas Ritchey of Baton Rouge, LA, and Ashley (Hosselrode) Dom of Valrico, FL.
He served in the US Navy as Yeoman First Class during WWII.  Following enlistment on January 9, 1942 and training in Washington, DC, Seattle, Delaware, and Ohio, he was assigned to the Pacific Theater of Operations, and served at US Naval Air Station, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, from December 22, 1943.  He received the Good Conduct, American Theater, Asiatic-Pacific, and Victory Medals.  He returned to the US on April 1, 1946, and was discharged on April 10.  He was a proud member of Hyndman High School Class of 1936 and graduated from Catherman’s Business School, Cumberland, prior to Navy enlistment.
Mr. Ritchey was the Postmaster of the Hyndman Post Office from 1946 to 1984.  He was a member of the First United Church of Christ and past president of the Consistory to the Glory of God, Hyndman-Londonderry Lions Club, Hyndman Rod and Gun Club, Oscar Jordan Post 7375, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, Board of the Hyndman-Londonderry Public Library, Buck’s Hunting Camp Treasurer, Business manager for Pen-Mar Baseball League, promoted the Bedford County Sports Hall of Fame, and served on the Hyndman Municipal Authority.
Active in the Boy Scouts of America for 65 years, he served in adult leadership positions, received the District Award of Merit, and Silver Beaver Award, Scouting’s highest Council recognition for volunteers giving distinguished service to youth.
For many years he helped organize numerous community and sports events and was chairman for the Hyndman Halloween and Memorial Day parades and participated in the annual Lions Hee-Haw show and Easter egg hunt.  He chaired the VFW Buddy Poppy sale for many years.
His family extends its deep appreciation to his caregivers and friends for their steadfast support; and to Hyndman Health Center, Hyndman Ambulance Association, Home Health, Family Hospice Care, Bedford Fulton Huntington Area Agency on Aging, and the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.
Friends will be received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, Inc., 169 Clarence Street, Hyndman on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Dr. Tomislav Dosch officiating. Viewing one hour prior to the service.
Burial will follow at Hyndman Cemetery with Military Honors by the Ft. Bedford Honor Guard
