Barbara E. (Malsberry) Ahlburn Shaffer
Hyndman, PA – Barbara Shaffer, 93, passed away on Friday, August 8, 2013, at the Country House in Cumberland, MD.
Born April 5, 1920, in Rockwood, PA, a daughter of the late Earl Austin and Essie Mae Malsberry, she is preceded in death by husbands, Harry L. Ahlburn and Richard E. Shaffer, step-daughter, Julie Ann Freeland, and infant brother, William Austin Malsberry.
Surviving are daughters, Barbara Lynn Cadwallader and husband Bob of Rocky Mount, NC; Mary Christine Ahlburn of Salisbury, MD; a son Lane J. Ahlburn and wife Kathy of Ellerslie, MD; step-son Richard T. “Rick” Shaffer and wife Lura of Bedford and step son-in law, Robert Freeland and wife Toni, New Bern, NC. Also surviving are grandchildren, Aaron Ahlburn, Andrea Goodpasture and husband Miles, Toni Suchting and husband Billy, Leigh Shaffer, Amy Kennaugh and husband Eric, and Lori Vickers and husband Timothy; and nine great grandchildren.
A graduate of the Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, she served as a 1st Lt. in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps in England during WWII and was a long-time nurse in Dr. John Topper’s office, Hyndman, PA. She was a member of the First United Church of Christ in Hyndman where she sang in the choir. She was also life-member of the Bedford Spring Order of the Eastern Star and the VFW.
Friends will be received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, Inc., 169 Clarence Street, Hyndman on Monday, August 12, 2013, from 1 to 3 pm, where a service will follow at 3 p.m.
Burial at Hyndman cemetery with Military Honors by the Ft. Bedford Honor Guard.
