Betty J. Shaffer, 87, of Hyndman, went to be with the Lord, Thursday, July 8, 2010, at Pennknoll Village.

She was born January 14, 1923, in Smithfield, PA; a daughter of the late David Thompson and Elizabeth (Helen) Thompson Burkett. She was also preceded in death by a son, Gary Lee Shaffer in 1953; and a sister, Dorothy Starkey.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Carson J. Shaffer, whom she married April 15, 1944; two daughters, Linda L. Bingman and husband, Rick, Lana L. Hull and husband, Gary, both of Hyndman, a brother, Paul Thompson and wife, Wilhelmina, of Fossilville; four grandchildren, Brigette Emerick and husband, Kris of Hyndman, Shane Bingman and wife, Jessica of Bedford, Brett Hull and wife, Ruthann of Chambersburg, Brittany Broadwater and husband, Luke of Cresaptown, MD; and four great grandchildren Bryce and Ethan Emerick of Hyndman and Calleigh and Alissa Hull of Chambersburg.

Mrs. Shaffer was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and the Hyndman Senior Center. She also enjoyed traveling and took many Bollman Bus trips with her husband. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Friends will be received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, Inc., 169 Clarence Street, Hyndman on Saturday, July 10th from 5 to 8 p.m.

A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Sunday, July 11th at 2 p.m. with Pastor Terry Campbell officiating.

Burial will follow at Madley Cemetery, Buffalo Mills, PA.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Faith Community Church or the Hyndman Area Rescue Squad.
