Donald Gary Hammersmith, 62, of Cumberland Rd, Bedford, died on Thursday, July 29, 2010 at Penn Knoll Village.

Donald “Gary” was born in Cumberland, Maryland on December 7, 1947, a son of Bert C. and Ellen Ruth (Lilya) Hammersmith of Glen Burnie, MD. He is preceded in death by his father.

On September 15, 1994, in Annapolis, MD, Gary married his beloved wife, Carolyn M. Emerck. She preceded him in death on September 27, 2007. He is survived by three daughters; Stephanie M. Antonis and husband, Stanley of Hampstead, MD, Candice M. Whaley of Relay, MD, Jennifer J. Hammersmith of Ridgley WV; three grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Andrea Faye Poremba of Wayne, Michigan, and Mrs. Charisse Lynn Bortle of Rotonda FL; two brothers, Mike Hammersmith of Savanna GA, and Steve Hammersmith of Glen Burnie, MD.

His employment career began and ended after 32 years of Federal service and retirement. Upon retirement he moved to his adoptive home in beloved, Bedford County. He was a quiet, humorous, gentle man, who will be missed by those who really knew him.

There will be no service or burial. He wishes to be cremated and privately placed in the Hammersmith plot at the Hyndman Cemetery.
