Cumberland, MD – Karl R. “Karlo” “Pap” Sturtz Jr., 81, of Cumberland, formerly of Ellerlie died Friday, November 19, 2010, at NMS Healthcare of Hagerstown with family members by his side. Born February 13, 1929, in Wellersburg, PA; he was the son of the late Carl and Leona “Maw” (Thomas) Sturtz.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Shirley E. (Waltman) Sturtz, whom he married April 6, 1953; sons, Victor Sturtz and wife Christine, Barrelville, Bobby Sturtz and wife Gwynne, Frostburg, daughters, Kathy Thompson and husband Royce, Ellerslie, Carla Shepherd and husband Rich, Ridgeley; granddaughters, Krissie Thompson, Kasey Robb and husband Pat, Cyra Shepherd; great grandsons, Brett Thompson, Taylor Thompson, Blayk Bridges, Liam Robb and Handley Robb; sisters, Betty Shockey and husband Calvin, Sue Getz, and Doris Miller.
Mr. Sturtz started out working in his father’s mines and then for others in the Wellersburg area. He also worked construction as a laborer at the Local 616.
After retirement he loved to go to Victor’s store in Barrelville to talk to old friends and meet new ones. They all called him “Pap”.
Friends will be received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, Inc., 169 Clarence Street, Hyndman on Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 11 am with Rev. Lance Tucker officiating. Burial will be private at Palo Alto Hilltop Cemetery.
