Robert A. Hiles

Robert A. Hiles, 81, of Hyndman, went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, April 20, 2010, at Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.

Born September 17, 1928, in Dearth, PA, he was a son of the late Francis M. and Carrie (Hardy) Hiles. He also was preceded in death by sisters, Donna Rae Augustine and Betty Upton; and a brother, James Hiles.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Joanna D. (Hilliard) Hiles, whom he married June 8, 1949; a son, Robert W. Hiles of Hyndman; daughters, Deborah D. Hiles of Kirkville, NY, Carrie V. Holler of Hyndman; a grandson, Levi J. Holler of Morgantown, WV; a brother, Earl Hiles and wife, Eileen of Twinsburg, OH; a half brother, William Hardy and wife, Marge of Uniontown; sister-in-law, Nancy Hiles of Annville, PA; and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Hiles retired from the USMC in 1971 with the rank of Master Gunnery Sergeant. He served in both Korea and Vietnam. He drove school bus for the Hyndman School District for two years and then worked at Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home for over 30 years, retiring in 2002.

He was a member of Palo Alto United Methodist Church, where he served as a greeter, lay leader, treasurer and was involved in many other church activities. He was also a member of the VFW and served as the treasurer for the Hyndman Cemetery Association for many years.

Friends will be received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, Inc., 169 Clarence Street, Hyndman on Friday, April 23rd from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday, April 24th at 11 a.m. with Reverends Lance Tucker, Sharletta Green and David Klink officiating.

Burial will follow at Hyndman Cemetery, with Military Honors by the Fort Bedford Honor Guard.
