Jacob V. “Johnny” Baker, 83, of Buffalo Mills was called home to the Lord, Monday November 13, 2023, while a resident of Donahoe Bedford Skilled Nursing. Born February 5, 1940, in Hyndman PA, Johnny was the son of the late Jacob W. and Mabel C. (Shaffer) Baker. He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther A. (Clapper) Baker and survived by his children, Judy A. Clapper and husband Mark of Buffalo Mills, John S. Baker and wife Gina of Altoona, and Suzanne E. Myers and husband Glenn of Port Matilda. Johnny is also survived by his grandchildren Justin, Jordan, and Jarrod Clapper, Mathew and David Baker, Cathy Spencer and Brooke Myers; his sister Peggy M. Luman and husband Joe of Alexandria, VA; his nieces Cathy Daniel, Dianna Foote, Christina Luman, and Jennifer Biondi; his nephews, Brian and Kevin Clapper, and several great grandchildren.

Johnny served in the US Army Reserves and was a supervisor at the Kelly Springfield Tire Co. for many years before retiring to his true love of farming. Johnny and Esther raised pure bred Simmental Cattle for years and simultaneously had the distinct pleasure of instilling the values of hard work, dedication, patience, and fervor for agriculture to his grandchildren. Johnny was more than a role model as a grandfather; he was a mentor in many ways. He often served on many agricultural, environmental, and conservation activities and was instrumental in assisting his grandchildren with numerous 4H projects including showing his pure-bred cattle.

Johnny was a member of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he served on council and sang in the choir. He was also a member of Hyndman Londonderry Lions Club and received their Melvin Jones Fellowship. He was for many years, involved in the Lions’ production of the well-received Hee Haw Show held yearly in Hyndman. He participated in community service through Thrivent Lutheran, Young at Heart games in Bedford, PA, and he coordinated the Reservists for the annual Hyndman Parade.

Johnny will be missed by his family and his community but will forever be remembered as a most patient, loving, kind, generous, and logical man who was for his family the patriarch and centerpiece of good times. May his recipe for sour dough pancakes and good family fun last through the generations!

Friends and family will be received at the Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 7319 Hyndman Rd, Buffalo Mills, PA on Thursday November 30, 2023 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

A funeral service will be conducted at the Church on Friday December 1, 2023 at 11 a.m. The Reverend Ryan K Viands and Vicar Penny Koontz will officiate. There will be visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Lybarger Cemetery, Buffalo Mills.
