Hyndman, PA – Joan May Coughenour, 86, of Hyndman, went to be with the Lord Tuesday March 5, 2019 at WMHS Regional Medical Center surrounded by her family.

Born June 17, 1932, in Hyndman, PA; she was a daughter of the late Delos and Tolva (May) Shaffer. She was also preceded in death by sisters, Rose Fochtman and Rita Leap; a brother, Gary Shaffer.

Survived by husband of 63 years, DeVon Ray Coughenour, whom she married, June 5, 1955; children, Michael Coughenour and wife Deanna, Hyndman, Deborah Daugherty and husband Richard “Doc”, Ridgeley, WV; DeVon Royce Coughenour and wife Angela, Hyndman; sister, Alice Ringler and husband Allen, Hyndman; 8 grandchildren, Chance M. Coughenour and wife, Carol, Blake M. Coughenour and wife Shijie, Zeb M. Coughenour and wife Jacqueline, Whitney M. Daugherty and boyfriend Ryan Patterson, Devin Rae Daugherty and fiancé Cody Canby, Amanda Coughenour and boyfriend Phillip Haney, Jacob R. Coughenour and Daniel R. Coughenour; one great granddaughter, Lumen Blake Coughenour; and several nieces and nephews.

Joan was a Registered Nurse at Memorial Hospital for over 40 years. She worked in the Nursery and helped care for thousands of local children, including her eight grandchildren. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, where she served as choir director. She also worked with her husband in his real estate and appraising business. After retirement Joan and Ray enjoyed traveling, she co-piloted an RV across the United States.

Friends will be received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, Inc., 169 Clarence Street, Hyndman on Friday March 8, 2019 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday March 9, 2019 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Fred Zickefoose officiating. Friends received one hour prior to service.

Burial will follow at Hyndman Cemetery.
