Mt. Savage – Thomas Howard Sansom of Gaithersburg, Md. passed away on December 20, 2019 at Holy Cross Hospice, Silver Spring, Md. Born December 30, 1946 in Cumberland, Tom was the son of the late Percy Richard Sansom and Mary Catherine (Lepley) Sansom. Tom is survived by his brother, Benjamin R. Sansom of LaVale, his niece, Diane M. Wilson and husband Stephen of Middletown, his nephew, William C. Sansom, San Diego, CA and a number of cousins
Tom attended Mt. Savage School, graduating in 1964. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Viet Nam War on the USS Hollister, which saw action in the South China Sea. Following his military service Tom attended Frostburg State College graduating in 1972. While at Frostburg, Tom excelled as a member of the Gymnastics Team under the tutelage of Fred Surgent. Following his graduation Tom taught Physical Education and Health in Montgomery County until his retirement in 2008.
Tom grew up in Barrellville and spent many happy hours wandering the hills near his grandfathers farm hunting mushrooms and picking wild berries with his dad. Tom also liked to fish and trap along the little stream that meandered from Wellersburg to Barrellville. As an adult Tom learned to play the guitar and spent many evenings in jam sessions with his dad and his Uncle Bill. In his later years Tom took up golf and became quite proficient at hitting long drives, many of which ended in the rough.
Friends will be received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, Inc., 169 Clarence Street, Hyndman on Saturday February 29, 2020 from 12 to 1 pm where a memorial service will follow at 1 p.m. with Rev. Dr. Tomislav Dosch officiating.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to The American Heart Association.
